Balasore Train Tragedy: Oxfam India to provide psychosocial care and counselling to disaster affected victims

Oxfam India is responding to the tragic three train collision in Balasore, Odisha. Oxfam India's humanitarian team at Balasore is responding with water, food,  non-food items, psychosocial counselling, and support to the injured and family members. Oxfam India extends its sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families.

Oxfam India's Interim CEO, Pankaj Anand said, "This is unfortunately a huge humanitarian disaster. Oxfam India is responding by providing essential services like food and water, setting up of blood donation camps. Oxfam India crucially will be mobilising professionals who will provide psychosocial support to the survivors and the family members. Oxfam India's humanitarian teams in Balasore will be keeping the focus on the survivors and the loved ones of those who are undergoing a massively agonising experience. This is the time when the survivors and family members need compassion and support from the rest of the country".

Oxfam India has deployed its humanitarian teams from Odisha and West Bengal to plan and initiate context specific humanitarian interventions. These include provision of ‘ready to eat’ food, provision of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Oxfam India will be providing drinking water, provision of hand wash facilities. Arrangements are also being made for temporary toilets around the area of the accident as well as in hospitals that provides healthcare facilities to injured and affected people. Oxfam India is also providing timely and accurate information to people regarding available medical, transport and other required support.

Oxfam India team is spearheading all these planned activities in coordination with local administration, government departments, local partners, NGOs and members of networks and consortiums such as Inter Agency Group (IAG) and State Disaster Management Authorities.

Background:-

Over 270 people have died and 900 people injured as two passenger trains, Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, derailed in Odisha’s Balasore on 2nd June. This is one of the deadliest train accidents in a decade in India so far.
