Breaking Boundaries at Home

Breaking Boundaries at Home

“मैं महिलाओं और लड़कियों के जीवन में बदलाव लाने के प्रयास जारी रखूंगा” (I will continue to make efforts to bring changes in lives of women and girls), said Gulab, a young changemaker from Chhattisgarh, who has joined the youth club facilitated by Oxfam India.

Gulab who hails from Odekhere village, lives with his parents and three sisters. After regularly attending Oxfam's monthly meetings and training sessions on domestic violence and child marriage, Gulab took an initiative to talk to his parents about the unjust discrimination against his sisters at home.

“I will not discriminate against my sisters, I will respect them and their thoughts, support them for higher education, their choice, ensure that they can go to market, etc.”, he shares with our team member who had gone to meet him.

He takes keen interest in all the discussions and has been successful in convincing his parents to allow his sisters to move around freely. He has also introduced his sisters to the girls group to gain knowledge about their right and live a dignified life.

Gulab takes active part in household chores and helps his mother and sisters. He regularly shares his experiences from the youth club with his friends and encourages his friends to respect the rights of women.

We celebrate our heroes who are setting benchmarks in breaking the gender stereotypes and smashing social norms in their own homes.
