Solar Boost For Rural Livelihood

Solar Boost For Rural Livelihood

A couple of months ago we brought to you the story of the Businesswomen of Godda who were involved in the Sal leaf plate making enterprise. The rural livelihood programme sees a big push now, thanks to solar power.

Based on the success of the solar-powered Sal leaf plate making unit in Chhattisgarh, two more machines were installed in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. This value addition will improve the quality of the product and fetch better price than the traditional hand-made plates. These have been set up in Bade Gobra village in Mainpur block in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district and in Mohanpur Village in Sundarpahari Block in Jharkhand's Godda district.

Conventional electricity is unreliable in these remote areas leading to loss of productivity and uncertainty. The solar unit will now provide uninterrupted steady power supply helping the women collectives to plan the trade better. These are 4KW solar unit consisting of 12 panels supplying 2.5 KW power to the machines. Battery packs have also been provided so that the villagers can continue to work in the evening if they wished to. We hope to showcase the success of the units to respective district authorities so that they can scale it up as part of the convergence model with FRA recognition.
