Cash scheme by Oxfam helped 500 families after Kashmir floods; Nepal could be next

In the aftermath of any disaster, relief is sent to survivors in the form of food, water, blankets, medicines etc. These are essential and life saving items and are needed in abundance.

But how will the survivors of the disaster restart their lives? For that they need monetary help. 

Oxfam identifies the most needy and provides Unconditional Cash Transfers (UCT) to those survivors of a disaster, which helps them get back on their feet.  

After the devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014, Oxfam provided UCT to 500 families in Srinagar and South Kashmir. 

Each family received Rs. 10,000 for their monthly expenses, while they pick up the pieces of their old lives.

Mohammad Yusuf Dar, resident Kellam Gund village, Kulgam district, Kashmir and his family also received Rs. 10,000 from Oxfam.

His home was washed away in the floods. He and his family are living at his brother’s house since the floods.

“The floods have left us devastated. I met with an accident, which left with me a broken leg. I used the Rs. 10,000 I got from Oxfam to run my house and buy my prescribed medicines. I am able to visit my doctor because of Oxfam. As I am the only earning member in the family, Oxfam understood our pain and need,” said Dar. 

Nasir Patigaru, a volunteer for Oxfam in Kashmir also complimented the UCT scheme of the organisation.

“There are daily requirement, how do people cater that? And money, hard cash for that was the biggest deed,” said Nasir.

Nepal needs help now

Now India’s Himalayan neighbour Nepal is in need of help after the massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake and hundreds of aftershocks have jolted the country.

Oxfam is in Nepal for the long haul and is right now providing relief materials such as food, water, shelter and hygiene kits.

Over a month has passed since the first earthquake and people are still without homes.  They need help.  DONATE NOW.
