Oxfam is responding to the floods in Tamil Nadu.

In coordination with other agencies and local authorities, Oxfam has defined geographical areas and sectors in Chennai to provide relief materials.

In the first phase of our response, Oxfam will be providing immediate support to 5,000 flood-affected households in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvalu District of Tamil Nadu. We are also responding in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

Oxfam will be providing drinking water and sanitation facilities, public health services, emergency food security and temporary shelter material.

The priority issue is provision of basic facilities like – food, water, shelter and sanitation materials to the flood affected population.

The situation on the ground

There is widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and assets because of the floods.

People are settled in cramped shelters, community buildings such as schools, on roadsides and open spaces near their submerged homes.

Outbreak of water borne diseases like diarrhoea is a major concern.

What Oxfam will do on the ground:
  • Distribution of emergency shelter materials to 5,000 households
  • Distribution of hygiene items like -- washing and bathing soaps, water purifying tablets, two buckets with lids, two mugs, ORS, mosquito net and sanitary cloth to 5,000 households
  • Rehabilitation of water sources, pipe system, open wells
  • Debris cleaning and environmental hygiene activities
  • Village cleaning
  • Identify and train community health volunteers
  • Construction of new emergency latrines and promotion of household latrines
  • Hygiene campaigns and ORS booths
  • Community meetings and house-to-house visits for hygiene promotion
  • Water quality testing and monitoring

The people in Chennai and Tamil Nadu need your help. DONATE NOW.
