“मेरा स्कूल नया हो गया है | पहले पानी पीने के लिए कोई जगह नहीं था | चापाकल से कपड़ा भीग जाता था | अब जो नया वॉश स्टेशन बना है वो बहुत अच्छा है |” This is Nisha Kumari of Kolawan School in Harnaut block in Nalanda district in Bihar. She is a class 6 student and aspires to become a police officer when she grows up.

Oxfam India-HDFC Bank’s Holistic Rural Development Programme (HRDP) is working in 15 village of three blocks of Nalanda district. One part of the project works on improving schools; as part of the project it has renovated schools and developed smart class installing smart boards and computer labs in 10 schools.

Through school renovation we have added basic amenities like drinking water stations, safe and gender-segregated toilet with running water through overhand tank with submersibles (as per school requirement); we have painted the walls and adorned it with wall paintings and Information Education and Communication (IEC) material. The schools have also been provided with a Smart Class and library.

Due to the renovation, the school premises look new and very attractive. The Smart Class has opened a new horizon of learning with internet which children are benefitting from. Through these Smart Classes, teachers are helping children with various concepts through smart board 3D drawing and exploring the internet as per their syllabus.

She is a class 8 student of Sirsi Middle School in Harnaut Block. She wants to become a doctor when she grows up.

The Oxfam India-HDFC project is turning around the education facilities of villages; besides providing basic infrastructure support to the school, the HRDP team also ensures that School Management Committee (SMC) meetings are held on time. It also engages student through student awareness sessions.

Sarwan Kumar, a parent from Amar village in Harnaut block says, “I am very happy that my daughter and son will be taught on computers in schools. I see better future prospects for my children”.
