“All the belongings, gold, copper utensils, clothes, which we had collected for our son and daughter’s weddings got washed away in the floods,” said Fazi Sheikh, a resident of Gund Tankipura village, Kulgam district, Kashmir.

Sheikh and her family were amongst the thousands, who lost everything after the 2014 floods in Jammu and Kashmir.

Oxfam identifies the most needy and provides Unconditional Cash Transfer (UCT) to those survivors of a disaster, which helps them get back on their feet.

After the devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014, Oxfam provided UCT to 500 families in Srinagar and South Kashmir.

Each family received Rs. 10,000 to make do of their monthly expenses, while they pick up the pieces of their old lives.

Sheikh and her family was one of the 500, who received money through the UCT programme. She used the money for the weddings on her daughter and son.

“We used the lentils, grains and all the provisions given to us for the two weddings,” she added.

“It was so emotional for us when our daughter visited us after marriage. We gave her the Oxfam blanket as a parting gift,” said a teary-eyed Sheikh.
