For pregnant women and children in Hesatu village of Ormanjhi block, Ranchi District, Jharkhand getting vaccination or nutrition on a regular basis is a far-fetched dream.

Why? Because the designated anganwadi sevika (attendant) for the village is always absent.

An anganwadi attendant from the neighbouring village does visit Hesatu, but not on a regular basis.

“The assigned Sevika (attendant) do not visit our village. When we question them, they are rude and dismissive to us. That’s why we don’t question them also. Reeta Devi, a local villager said.

To add to their woes, no ambulance service is available in the village. This means that pregnant women have to go to the hospital by auto rickshaws during any emergencies.

This is a ground report by Video Volunteer (VV) community correspondent, Nirmala Ekka. This series on community monitoring of maternal health is supported by Oxfam India.

Further to this, since 2013, pregnant women in the village are yet to receive the cash incentives promised to them under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY).

Pregnant women living below poverty line in India are entitled to two government schemes -- Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram (JSSK).

Under them they are entitled:

  • Free and cashless delivery
  • Free drugs and consumables
  • Free diet during stay in the health institutions
