Her struggle for an education

Her struggle for an education

Tanu* dreams of going to school so she can help her family break out of poverty. Every day she would travel from her slum in Raebareli to study in a nearby Upper Primary School. But due to poor economic conditions, 14-year-old Tanu had to make a sacrifice. She was compelled to take care of her younger siblings and complete household chores in the absence of her working parents.

‘Education can truly make a difference. If only I could study, I would no longer be dependent. I will be able to earn money, take care of my family and send my siblings to school,” says Tanu.

Oxfam India through its Education program conducts tracking of out-of-school children and identified Tanu in one such tracking. After counselling her parents, she was enrolled in 6th standard in the Upper Primary School, Raebareli. Support from people like you enables Oxfam India to identify and encourage children and parents for education.

Due to sibling care and household chores, she is unable to regularly attend school, efforts are being made to motivate and counsel her parents to allow her and her siblings to attend school on a regular basis.

Oxfam India's Education Program
Oxfam India is working towards increasing people's access to quality and universal education in the mainstream public education system. Our focus has been on ensuring the proper implementation of the Right To Education Act, monitor the delivery of quality education on the ground and identify out-of-school children to help them enrol back in school. In particular, we reach out to the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in the six poorest states of India enabling children to receive quality education.
